Why weight and body condition belong together

Scale weight alone cannot show whether a dog is carrying excess fat or losing muscle. The tool pairs weight with a 1–9 body-condition score to create a rough target reference.

  • Look and feel for ribs, waist and abdominal tuck
  • Use the same scale and similar timing for trends
  • Confirm scoring technique with your veterinary team
02

Use the result as a trend marker

Compare repeated measurements instead of treating the target as an exact ideal. Breed build, muscle, coat and examiner technique can all affect the interpretation.

When to seek an individual assessment

Unplanned loss, marked gain, muscle loss, swelling, appetite change or reduced activity needs a professional assessment rather than a calculator-only plan.
